VILLAGERS of Vunaniu in Serua are drinking rainwater after their main water pipe was swept away by floodwaters two days ago.

Villager Samisoni Matanitaubua said this happened whenever the Selo bridge — where the pipe lay submerged — was flooded.

“This is a norm for us as we live in a flood-prone area,” he said.

“We have water tanks that normally help us save water. All we have to do is boil the water so it is safe to drink.”

Mr Matanitaubua said it would take days to fix the water pipe.

“It’s been two days now since the pipe broke. We will have to wait until the bad weather passes and the area is dry.”

The village sources its water from next to Nacaribogi settlement.

“The continuous rain is filling our water tanks right now.”
