PEOPLE on Taveuni have started securing their homes and belongings as Tropical Cyclone Tino heads towards Vanua Levu and expected to make landfall later this evening.

At Salia Settlement, located just opposite the island’s jetty, people were seen putting up shutters to secure their homes from strong winds expected to hit the island later tonight.

People were also seen removing roofing iron from sheds constructed outside their homes.

The weather bulletin issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service this afternoon says Cikobia, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, the eastern half of Viti Levu, Yasawa, Lomaiviti and the rest of Lau group should expect damaging gale force winds with average speeds of 75km/hr and momentary gusts to 100km/hr.

They should also expect periods of rain, heavy at times and squally thunderstorms.

Persistent localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas and sea flooding along coasts could be expected during high tides.
