POLICE officers in the Western Division would be patrolling the streets in urban and rural centres to ensure the safety of the public during Tropical Cyclone Tino.

West divisional police commander Senior Superintendent of Police Surend Sami said while the region would not feel the full brunt of the Category 1 cyclone, officers would still be on high alert.

SSP Sami said they did not want anyone taking any risks during this time.

“The weather advisories from Fiji Met are for the whole country so people everywhere should be taking extra precautions,” he said.

“So we will be carrying out patrols in all of the towns and city ensuring that the public are following these advisories.

“We have teams on standby and who will be working with all of the relevant authorities as TC Tino approaches.”

SSP Sami also issued a warning to people living in flood-prone areas.

“If you know that you’re living in a flood-prone area or near rivers and streams that get flooded, please move to higher grounds.

“Don’t take any unnecessary risks.

“Our officers will be monitoring flooded rivers and streams and will help people who need to be moved.”

Earlier this week, chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Maretino Qiolevu advised parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children.

If they were found playing in flooded rivers, streams and crossings, the adults would be questioned.

He said those found to be at fault would be charged with disobedience of lawful order under the Criminal Act.
