Update: 2:30PM NEW ZEALAND Police are reminding members of the public to take care as Tropical Cyclone Gita crosses the country today, particularly on the roads.
Motorists in affected areas are urged to drive to the conditions.
NZ Police manager Operations, Road Policing Inspector Peter McKennie advised motorists to allow more time for travel because of the need to reduce speed and increase following distances.
He also advised people to always be aware of high winds and possible debris on the road.
“Motorists are encouraged to check road updates from New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) prior to travel,” Insp McKennie said.
“Police districts will continue to monitor the weather situation and are ready to assist civil defence and other agencies should there be the need,” he said.
