A TAXIDRIVER who abducted and raped a 14-year-old girl was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 11 years by High Court judge Justice Riyaz Hamza yesterday.
Umendra Kumar had abducted the girl between January 11 and January 13, 2014, took her to the Western Division and raped her on three separate occasions.
While delivering his sentence, Justice Hamza told Kumar he abused his authority as a public vehicle driver by taking advantage of the victim’s vulnerability and helplessness.
He said it was imperative for the court to ensure the protection of women and children from sexual offenders. Justice Hamza told the rapist that his action would impact the victim psychologically and socially for the rest of her life.
The judge said all mitigating factors submitted were not in Kumar’s favour.
Kumar will be eligible for parole after serving 11 years and nine months behind bars.
