Nadi cabbies who used to rake it in during pre-COVID times are struggling to make $20 a day.

Munsami Pillay, a taxi operator for the past 30 years, said the containment measures were limiting people’s movement, which was affecting their business.

“People don’t have work during this lockdown and our business is affected because a lot of them are not moving, if people move, our business improves,” he said.

Mr Pillay said close to 35 taxis operated from the stand located beside confectionery stalls at the Nadi bus stand.

“We come daily with the hope of making some money but most go home after midday because there are no customers.”

He said most cabbies were surviving on small trips from the Nadi bus stand to the Nadi Hospital.

“Almost all of us, whether you are an owner or driver, are breadwinners for our family and we fear what might happen if the virus continues.”
