The Fiji Taxi Association had made a submission on May 4 to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) to increase taxi fares.

This was confirmed by general secretary Ashwin Lal during an interview yesterday.

Mr Lal said the association hoped it would be implemented soon.

“Because the price of fuel, car parts and food items is going up and the association members are facing difficulties we have no other choice but to increase the fare,” he said. “Our last fare increase was done in 2008.

“So after 14 years we are asking for another fare increase.

“For some of the taxi operators it’s their bread and butter.” Mr Lal said the increase in taxi fare would be a reasonable amount.
