Taxi driver jailed to 11 years for rape of a teenager

Update: 2:08PM A TAXI driver was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment by the High Court in Suva today for raping a 16-year-old student in 2016.

The 33-year-old of Nabua appeared before Justice Salesi Temo.

In passing sentence, Justice Temo told the accused he had exploited the naive nature of the complainant despite the opposition of the complainant’s father in forming a relationship with the complainant.

He said the sentence was designed to punish the man in a manner that was just in all circumstances, to protect the community from people like him, and deter other would-be offenders.

He will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years.
