Taveuni man to front court for murder

Listen to this article:

A man alleged to have caused the death of a 35-year-old Taveuni farmer during an argument out at sea last Friday has been charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Police allege the incident occurred between Laucala Island and Taveuni.

In its initial report, police alleged an argument broke out at sea between the victim who was on a boat with two others and the suspect who was fishing on another boat.

Police then reported that the 48-year-old suspect  hit the victim with a stick that rendered him unconscious , and then “deliberately bumped their boat causing the victim to fall overboard”.

The Qamea villager’s body was later recovered on Sunday by a diver from Matangi Island Resort.

The accused will be produced at the Labasa Magistrates Court today.
