Anare Tania, 14, says he was humbled to be selected head boy of Vishnu Deo Memorial Primary School.
“Last year was a difficult year for me,” he said.
“Weeks before the examination, I was admitted for meningitis, so I was stuck in a hospital bed while my classmates continued to study in school.
“I didn’t let it get me down though. While my friends studied in school, I’d open up my books and study on my own.
“I started school a day before the final exams and sat for general, maths, English and vernacular during that week. When we received our results, I was glad I did really well and came second in my class.
“I believe I have made my family proud of my achievements and this year I hope to do just as well in my Fiji Year Eighth Examination.
“This year I’m hoping to achieve more than 450 in my examination since our results determine what schools we can attend.
“I’m hoping to attend Queen Victoria School next year so I will work hard towards that this year.
“I would like to thank my grandmother, Naomi Cewa for being supportive of me during difficult times and I hope she’s proud of my achievements today.”
His mother, Jiko Rasotale, said she was overwhelmed with pride and hoped her eldest son would be a good leader of his fellow students and a younger brother who is in Year 3.
