AN idea of merging the Vodafone Super Deans Rugby Championship and Vodafone Rugby Kaji Festival finals was discussed unofficially by the two unions during the Fiji National Kaji Rugby Festival in Sigatoka last week.

Under the sponsorship of Vodafone for both competitions and assisted by the Fiji Rugby Union, the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union and Fiji Primary Schools Rugby Union believe it’s a possibility to organise such an event.

FPSRU president Owen Ratumaikoro said there’s a possibility but it’s a matter of discussion between the FSSRU, FPSRU, FRU and Vodafone.

“The hype of the Deans Trophy competition is up there and the Kaji is still making its way up,” he said.

“We’ll see if there’s a possibility of merging the two together.”

However, FSSRU president Setareki Merekula said organising such event could be close to impossible.

“To merge the two events together would take a miracle to accomplish because of the time frames of zones meets,” he said.

“The format of the two unions and its rules are different. Our finals are between schools, but they represent their provinces and most importantly the breathing space for the parents supporting their children.

“There are many reasons of the dos and the don’ts but that is my opinion.”

The idea was an opinion raised by some parents during the Kaji Rugby Festival competition in Sigatoka because the Deans is held before the Kaji.
