Discussions are afoot to bring back the Road Safety Council, says Land Transport Authority (LTA) acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa.

During an interview with The Fiji Times online platform The Lens @177, Mr Rokosawa said this also included the possibility of bringing back road marshalls.

“Previously, there were close to 300 road marshals around Fiji, but due to budgetary provisions, those initiatives were shelved,” he said.

“Those that were there before me also saw the need to address (road issues) in a Fijian perspective, which was to have the visibility on the ground and especially in the black spots,” he said.

“In areas where LTA and Fiji police are not present, this is where the road marshalls come in and also, educating pedestrians.”

He said the Road Safety Council was also an avenue to spread awareness about road behaviour and awareness.

“There’s also been a discussion to bring back the Road Safety Council. Right now, in terms of road safety awareness, it’s scattered around a number of stakeholders; the Fiji police, FRA, LTA, ACCF, National Fire Authority, St John Ambulance.

“We need a probably independent body that is solely responsible for road safety awareness programs and any other related activities and these road marshalls were part of the (road safety) council.”
