Taiwan official claims assault

Taiwan has alleged its Fiji office librarian was assaulted by two diplomats from the Chinese Embassy.

Fiji Police have confirmed a report was lodged by the Embassy of China on 8 October while the acting Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Yogesh Karan said they hadn’t received any diplomatic note from either the Taiwan Trade Office or the Embassy of China.

Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Ho-jen Tseng told his Parliament yesterday the alleged assault took place at a reception to celebrate Taiwan’s national day.

“What is even more outrageous is that when the Fiji police arrived at the scene, the Chinese embassy staff refused to (assist their) investigation on the grounds of diplomatic immunity,” Mr Tseng told Taiwan’s parliament.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said they are investigating the incident.

“The matter is currently being investigated by CID and we are liaising with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the issue,” she said.

“This is all that we can comment on as investigations are ongoing.”

China views democratic Taiwan as part of China and demands that other countries recognise only the government in Beijing and deny diplomatic recognition to Taiwan.
