TAILEVU secured their first win against Ovalau in the round nine of the Skipper Cup tournament 32-8 at Ratu Cakobau Park.
Maika Baleinatoto enabled Tailevu to register first on the scoreboard by slotting in two penalties by the 20th minute of play.
A try in the 30th and 38th minute from Pauliasi Rokosuka and Epeli Ruivadra saw them further their lead 20-3 by the breather with Ovalau’s Leonard Mateo successfully kicking a penalty for Ovalau.
In the second phase Tailevu managed two tries one of which unconverted which tallied their points at 32.
Ovalau’s second half try from Niko Volavola was not enough to keep them in contention with the fulltime whistle marking the end of the match with the final points 32-8.
Tailevu coach Jone Kaila said the feat was a good indicator that the team had grasped all they had been taught during preparations.
“It’s a good change.
“The team has been camping for the past few weeks to be able to boost their morale and we can see that there has been a positive outcome,’ he said.
With the team scheduled to host Tavua in their next match Kaila said he hopes to continue the momentum and ensure that they secure another feat in the second last round.
Ovalau coach Etuate Waqa said the team had a lot of missed opportunities in the first phase of play which added to their loss.
“We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities in the first 40 minutes and we didn’t defend well in the second half which cost us the game. We have always had to play catch up and in the end it’s not enugh to win.
He added that despite this he team had made progress and hinted on some positive changes.
“This shows the experience in the team, they do not have a lot of depth but hey have shown significant improvement in the breakdowns,” he said.
