Tabakaucoro’s Rio Olympics dream in limbo

BANUVE Tabakaucoro’s hopes to participate in the Olympics could be in limbo.

This after Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joseph Rodan (Jr) clarified that should Leslie Copeland qualify in Javelin, the wild card entry for the Olympics for males was officially cancelled.

“The wild card is to allow for representation if nobody qualifies and Leslie right now is working hard because he knows he has nothing to lose. If he qualifies then Banuve will also have to qualify otherwise he will not compete. So both athletes have a lot to prove at this stage,” he said.

With Athletics Fiji holding their final trials for the Melanesian Games today at the ANZ Stadium, Rodan added that they hope to provide two squads in the open and U18 grade.

“We want to be able to maximise on the opportunity and have at least three athletes in one event and select the best athlete for the Olympics because it serves as a qualifying event,” he said.

“At the moment we are looking — if neither Leslie or Banuve qualify — then the best bet for the wild card entry will be Banuve. The only thing that can stop him participating is if he is injured and in this case our best bet to go for the male will be one of the top three athletes in the inter-boys 400m finalists from the Coca-Cola Games, which is why the Melanesian Games is really important and why the athletes need to come for the trials tomorrow (today),” he said.

The trials begin at 6pm at the ANZ Stadium, Laucala.
