Suvavou Wins Men’s Volleyball

THE Suvavou men’s team walked away $3000 richer and with the 15th Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s carnival volleyball title after beating Waica X by 3-1 in the final.

It was a battle of the best team from Viti Levu and Waica from Vanua Levu on Taveuni.

Waica X won the first set 22-25 before Suvavou fought back to clinch the next three sets 25-19, 25-22 and 30-28.

The side from Lami defeated Waica 1 in the semi-final.

Dateline Titans came in third place while Waica 1 finished fourth.

Suvavou coach Jone Rasi said they achieved their goal at the tournament.

Before travelling to Taveuni, the side won the Hot Bread Kitchen Newtown tournament.

“We reached the final here in Wairiki last year and unfortunately lost. This year we vowed to make it to the final and win and a win it is,” he said.

“Waica is a good team and we hope they will come over to Suva and take part in the tournaments as it will help their team improve on their skills. The more competition the more competitive they become.

“They really challenged us and it was in the last quarter that they really came in strong.

“We played 20 minutes in the last quarter. It just showed the level of competition they provided to us.

“Thank you Waica and thank you Wairiki, we will be looking forward to next year to defend our title.”
