WE have a family here at the betting house, says Suva punter Sabena Turaga.

Originally from Tailevu, Turaga is a familiar face at the Grants Betting Pte Ltd headquarters in Suva.

Yesterday, while the general public and horse racing fans made a last minute rush to place their bets on the Melbourne Cup, Turaga and his horse racing betting mates shared the VIP spot towards the end of the outlet sharing their views on yesterday’s race.

Turaga said while everyone did not expect to win, they would win some other day.

“It’s all about the fun side of it,” Turaga said. “We do win a lot of money, but we also try and help each other if we don’t win.

“It’s like any other place you go and meet friends. We become a family.”

Turaga said he started betting when he was 16 years old in 1977. He is now 59. ”

Betting is a good stress reliever as well.”

He said his biggest win so far in horse racing was $7000 on a single bet some years ago.
