Suva Masters on track in Nadi

DEFENDING champions Suva Masters are on track at the 2014 RC Manubhai/APCO Coatings International Veterans Tournament after qualifying for today’s semi-final at Prince Charles Park.

William Sikuri starred for Suva Masters during the quarter-final against Nadi Veterans yesterday.

The former Suva rep scored two goals in the 3-0 win against the hosts.

Former Nadi and Lautoka rep Watisoni Voli scored the other goal for Suva Masters.

Suva Masters coach Inosi Cava said they were happy with the progress.

“The aim is to defend the title,” he said.

“The players have shown a lot of discipline and commitment. We haven’t prepared that well because there wasn’t much notice given for the tournament.

“However the players have displayed a lot of guts to get this far.”

A cloud of doubt surrounds Suva Masters top scorer Manoa Masi for the semi-final.

Masi, who scored four goals in two pool matches, has a muscle injury.

“The boys are really feeling the heat,” Cava said.

“Manoa our star player did not play in the quarter-final after pulling a muscle. Probably he will miss the semi-final. We are taking each game as it comes.

“For the veterans there needs to be more games. It is not only this one off tournament but matches during the National League matches as well. We do not want these players to be forgotten.”

In the other quarter-finals Nadroga Veterans defeated Suva Veterans 1-0, Ba Veterans beat Ba Legends 2-0 and New Zealand Lautoka Masters downed New Zealand Nadro Veterans1-0.

In the first semi-final at 9am, New Zealand Lautoka Masters will face Ba Veterans while Suva Masters will take on Nadroga Veterans after that.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel says the veteran’s event was a success.

“The tournament has reached a level where people are enjoying and the crowd numbers are slowly increasing,” Patel said.

“In years to come the competition will reach even greater heights and I would like to thank the overseas teams for participating.
