RAM Sami & Sons (Fiji) Ltd has partnered with Market Development Facility (MDF) to support more sustainable farming practices, increase farmer yields and incomes in Fiji.

According to a statement from MDF the partnership would allow the company to produce commercial grade poultry manure.

It was stated the increasing demand for farm fresh eggs, the expansion of the Ram Sami saw more chickens with which came more chicken manure.

However until recently Ram Sami had only sold the unprocessed chicken manure to nearby farmers.

The Australian Government-funded MDF would support Ram Sami & Sons to convert chicken manure produced at its farms into commercial poultry manure.

This would be done through a market assessment, support with training farmers on sustainable farming practices as well as additional promotion and marketing activities.

Poultry manure would provide a slow-release source of macro and micronutrients and acted as a soil amendment.

According to the MDF it was also rich in the nutrients which plants needed to establish strong root systems and produce foliage and fruit.

Ram Sami and Sons managing director Prashneel Sami was optimistic that local farmers would be able to benefit from the new commercial grade poultry manure products.

“Our goal is to develop more sustainable business practices and we hope with our new poultry manure product, it will also help farmers to adopt more sustainable farming cultivation and move away from artificial fertilizers to using local organic solutions,” he said.

Mr Sami said the new business would also help farmers to increase crop production while keeping nutrients in the field and improving soil health.

MDF country director Malcolm Bossley said the partnership would support more sustainable farming in the country.

He said the use of organic fertiliser options such as poultry manure would position Fiji’s agriculture exports well with the growing global demand for sustainable, chemical-free produce.

“Many farmers are reluctant to go into organic farming or adopt more sustainable farming practices because of the costs associated with purchasing organic fertilizer.

“We look forward to working with Ram Sami & Sons to make commercial poultry manure more accessible and affordable for farmers in Fiji,” he said.

MDF stated with the processing facility scheduled to be commissioned by December 2021, the Ram Sami & Sons intended to launch a few different poultry manure products for both backyard and commercial farmers.
