A TEENAGE boy who committed burglary and theft offences in order to pay for his school fees received a three-year suspended sentence by the High Court in Suva on Tuesday.
Roko Mate pleaded guilty to one count of burglary and one count of theft before High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar.
In passing sentence, Justice Goundar said the 18-year-old was raised only by his mother and that he was from a disadvantaged background.
He said Mate committed the offence after his external examination results was released.
The court was informed that on January 30 this year, the boy entered a vacant home and stole assorted items worth $700.
Justice Goundar said he considered Mate’s early guilty plea.
Justice Goundar handed Mate a 12-month imprisonment term suspended for three years.
