THE Agriculture Department in the North has started a survey on the effects of the present drought on the agricultural sector in the division.
Principal agricultural officer John Cox said the survey was expected to be completed soon.
“The objective of the survey is to gauge the percentage of the current drought on the agriculture sector in the division,” Mr Cox said.
“We have issued requirements for our offices in the North to submit reports to us and we are soon to receive these reports.
“Areas that we are aware of and affected by the current climatic condition include the dry side of Macuata and surrounding areas.”
Mr Cox said the long dry condition affected the growth of leafy vegetables.
“We are receiving report of instances where farmers have started selling their livestock because they do not have any other option.
“There is not much that can be done to assist farmers because the weather system is something that is out of our control.
“We are advising farmers to act reasonably to address the effects of this weather on their farms and livestock.”
