POLICE have won the football competition at the ANZ 2019 Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition defeating Army 3-1.

It was a hard-fought win as Army led 1-nil after an early goal by Christopher Wasasala.

Madhavan Goundar equalised for Police as both teams rested 1-all at half-time.

Police showed more urgency in the second spell as Army chose to defend.

An injury to Army goalkeeper Epeli Loaniceva and a red card to Wasasala proved to be the difference.

Police took full advantage and goals from Waisea Navunigasau and Tevita Waranivalu sealed the win for the Blues.

Police captain Akuila Mataisuva said preparation time proved to be the difference this year.

“Last year, we trained for only three weeks and we lost. This year, we made sure we had a good preparation and we trained for three months,” Mataisuva said.

The Sukuna Bowl rugby competition kicks off at 2pm at Suva’s ANZ Stadium today.
