GOVERNMENT is committed to revitalising the sugar industry, says permanent secretary at the Prime Minister’s office Yogesh Karan.

While visiting canefarmers and families around Labasa with a team from the Sugar Cane Growers Fund, Mr Karan also reassured them of Government’s assistance.

Government, he said, had approved requests for grants to purchase plants and equipment.

During his visit, the canefarmers also asked for assistance to purchase trucks and harvesters for cane farming purposes.

In his response, Mr Karan said he would look at these requests subject to availability of funds. However, he encouraged farmers to apply for the new farmer grant program that Government had allocated.

The fund’s chief executive officer Raj Sharma said his team had started working on a new funding program for mechanical harvesters and other products.

For expiry of leases, Mr Sharma said they were working with the iTaukei Land Trust Board on this issue.

He said the fund would pay the premiums to renew the leases that would expire soon in cane farming areas.
