TWENTY-ONE cooperatives were provided with grants to assist them in purchasing mechanical harvesters last year, says Sugar Ministry permanent secretary Yogesh Karan.
He said the ministry allocated a further $1 million this year for farm mechanisation aid.
“The ministry will be providing tractors with implements to cooperatives to assist farmers in reducing their production costs,” he said.
“Through the Government loan guarantee, FSC has procured 30 tractors with implements which will provide opportunities for growers to hire these 30 tractors at a much cheaper rate when compared with the market rate.”
He said the direct assistance to the Fiji Sugar Corporation outlined in the 2017-2018 National Budget was $30.5m.
“Of the $60m Budget allocated to the Ministry of Sugar, $30.5m direct capital grant assistance was provided to FSC to reduce costs for growers.”
