Sugar City boys hold Nadroga in Lautoka

LAUTOKA pulled out their best performance this season to hold BLK Nadroga Stallions 20-all during the round nine of the Skipper Cup competition at Nadovu Park yesterday.

The gutsy Maroons outfit defied all odds and stunned the reigning champions in front of their vocal fans.

The Ifereimi Rawaqa-coached side trailed 6-15 at the break but later found their rhythm in the second spell to score two tries to one.

Livewire hooker Maikeli Sivo was outstanding for the Maroons in his battle against the bigger oppositions such as Setefano Samoca and Seru Cakobau.

He was rock solid in defence and lethal in attack causing havoc to the oppositions.

Sivo’s hard work was rewarded with a classic try in the second spell when he busted his way past two defenders to score a try that was converted by half back Sireli Lewalau to level the scores.

But it was the Stallions who had themselves to blame for missing out crucial points.

The Stallions with the services of some new faces failed to convert five penalties — two of those penalties were awarded inside Lautoka’s 22m line.

Nadroga scored three tries compared with Lautoka’s two but their kickers let them down.

Stallions manager Ilavi Kato said the issue would be addressed during their training this week and commended Lautoka for their effort.

“The kicking department is an issue we will work especially with two rounds of games remaining,” he said.
