STUDENTS of Lami Primary School and Mahatma Gandhi Primary School in Suva turned up to school yesterday dressed in costumes of different characters to mark Library Week.

Lami Primary School headteacher Ruci Robarobalevu said the day was celebrated to focus on the importance of reading in the education of Fiji’s future citizens.

While officiating at the Mahatma Gandhi Primary School’s Library Week celebration, The Fiji Times editor Fred Wesley told students that libraries were foundations of civilisations.

Wesley said libraries were important for communities as they allowed members to explore and experience new ideas and read wonderful stories.

“Those who will progress to further studies will have to deal with more books which will in turn lead them to even more books,” he said.

“Whether you like it or not, a good number of these books will be housed in libraries.”

The theme for this year’s Library Week is “Library is Equal to a Strong Community”.
