An 11-year-old student is believed to be Fiji’s latest drowning victim following the tragic incident in Sigatoka on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the young girl had accompanied her parents to Sigatoka where the alleged incident occurred.

“The victim had gone swimming in the Sigatoka River near Qereqere despite being warned not to, and her parents were alerted of the incident by other children after she had disappeared,” Police said today.

A search was conducted and her body was recovered but attempts made by a National Fire Authority officer to revive her were unsuccessful, Police said.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death as investigations continue.

The national drowning death toll stands at 31 compared to 38 for the same period last year.
