ENGAGING and empowering women is a key strategy of strengthening the resilience of communities.

This was highlighted by ADB Pacific country specialist Erik Aelbers while speaking at a workshop on using Fiji law, policy and governance to strengthen women’s resilience to climate and disaster risk at Naviti Resort in Sigatoka today.

He said Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) measures could become more successful and sustainable if they address social and economic barriers that women face.

Mr Aelbers added that it was clear that gender, climate change and disaster risk management were complex issues  and this complexity may be part of the reason why there were still significant gaps in mainstreaming gender equality in CCDRM work.
