Stewart ready for national sevens duties

HARDWORKING John Stewart is expected to bring experience to the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team at the Dubai 7s after making his transition from the 15s to the 7s code of rugby under coach Gareth Baber.

Stewart, 29, had played for Sunwolves in the Super Rugby where he played as a winger. He had also played for the Flying Fijians and the Fijian Drua team earlier this year. He plays for Suva in the domestic competition.

“I am looking forward to represent my country in the 7s code of rugby if given a chance,” he said.

“To be honest, it is bit tough playing 7s as it is always easier for any player to make a transition from 7s to 15s, but from 15s to 7s it is very tough transitional period.

“It requires a lot of work in terms of your fitness so it is going to be tough in training wise.”

The Kadavu native who is an army officer by profession said he was excited to be part of the Fiji 7s team.

“It is the dream of each and every rugby player to don the national jumper especially the 7s jersey and it is same for me when I got the opportunity to play 7s,” he said.

“My source of inspiration is my daughter Wati and wife Gina and everything I do in my life I always do it for them.

“I am dedicating my selection to them and I am going to play for them.

“I am looking forward to rubbing shoulders with the famous players whom I have just watch play on television and I will try to get to know them personally.

“I am thankful to the coach for giving me an opportunity and it is an honour to be with the team.”

Fiji is pooled with Wales, Russia and Australia.
