‘Step up’ for games

ATHLETICS Fiji team manager Joseph Rodan Jr yesterday called on athletes to step up if they want to qualify for the Team Fiji final squad to the Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Rodan Jr said with seven weeks left, athletes should be looking after themselves well.
“We don’t want to overwork our athletes and if they get injured or we lose someone, we have no replacement as backup, so we’re playing our cards safely,” he said during the Team Fiji Athletes Forum at the Holiday Inn Suva yesterday.
“On Tuesday, we will be presenting our final team and the reserve team listing to the FASANOC special general meeting. They will come back to us and let us know the final team on February 24.
“Preparation has been good as we have our weekly competitions where the training squad has been attending and the level of performance hasn’t really dropped compared to the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu last year.
“The next phase is after the team has been named, we will send the final nine athletes to the Gold Coast to spend four weeks in a training camp prior to the games.”
Rodan Jr said the onus was on the athletes to prove themselves and remain focused on achieving their goals at the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in Australia from April 4-15.
