Deregulating the telecommunications, and the ICT sector, was a step in the right direction for Fiji, says Shaheen Ali, Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport permanent secretary and acting permanent secretary for Local Government.

Mr Ali said the consistent investment in ICT infrastructure also meant the cost of mobile coverage and broadband services in Fiji was amongst the lowest in the region and if not the world.

“Today, we have greater accessibility, greater competition, and better services – all of which has led to cheaper call rates and competitive data bundles,” he said.

Mr Ali made the comments as he officially opened Digicel’s new store in TappooCity Suva yesterday.

“Having the best infrastructure and connectivity has given global techno-leaders – SpaceX – the assurance to set up a Starlink gateway station in Fiji.

“This station will provide the internet gateway to Tonga, in the wake of the volcanic eruption that severed all of Tonga’s link to the world.

“Such trailblazer establishments are advancing Fiji’s position as the hub for the Region’s telecom and ICT operations.”

Mr Ali said as Digicel Fiji increased its digital reach, it’s contributing to the vision of the Fijian Government — to pave the way in the Pacific and eventually—the world.

According to Digicel Fiji the new retail store is in line with the company’s effort to deliver the best in-store experience for customers.

Digicel Fiji chief executive officer Farid Mohammed said they were excited to open the doors to a new retail experience in Suva yesterday adding that it wasa testament to their continued commitment to ensuring easy access to their services.

“Our customers are our number one priority and we are always looking at how to improve the services we offer.

“This new location is conveniently located with best in class setup.

“The fantastic looking store has an Entertainment Hub that enables customers to explore Sky Pacific offerings – sport, movies, music, and more.

“There are also live mobile phones displays that offers customers a first-hand experience and help them to decide on which phone to purchase.

“There is also a special business solutions room to cater for corporate customers,” he said.

To celebrate the opening the company had great specials and promotions for customers yesterday and also opening month specials – Samsung A02 mobile phone for $199 inclusive of a $10 monthly data plan and Samsung A12 for $319 with a cooler bag and $10 monthly data plan and new sign-ups for Sky Pacific for $159 inclusive of 2 months subscription and installation.

The store will offer the latest range of devices as well as end-to-end customer service support.
