Severe Tropical Cyclone Kevin weakened to a category 4 system around 6am today while located to the far south of Fiji.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, STC Kevin is gradually moving East-southeast and has exited the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC) Nadi Area of Responsibility (AoR) this morning with warning responsibilities handed over to the New Zealand Meteorological Service.
The national weather forecasting centre in Nadi said, however, that an active trough of low pressure with cloud and rain associated with STC Kevin continued to affect the group.
It has forecast strong and gusty winds to prevail over the land areas of Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, northwestern Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Bua and Macuata until tomorrow.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist over Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, northern Ba and Ra, greater Nadi, Lautoka and Ba areas, Sigatoka, interior Nadroga-Navosa, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller island, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
On Tuesday, rain is expected to continue over Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Lau and Lomaiviti group while easing to showers over the rest of the country.
The weatherman has advised that the risk of flash flooding remains, especially for low-lying areas, small streams and flood prone areas in the Western Division.
The coastal areas of Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Coral Coast, Beqa, Vatulele, Kadavu and southern Lau group have been advised of the risk of coastal inundation.
And people in those areas are warned of hazardous breaking waves and strong currents, and the risk posed for swimming, fishing and other recreational sea activities.
