STC Harold: Tropical cyclone alert in force for western half of Viti Levu

A tropical cyclone alert is in force for Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, western half of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

In its special weather bulletin report two issued tonight, the Fiji Meteorological Service in Nadi says the cyclone alert was now in force as well for the rest of Viti Levu, Lomaiviti and Southern Lau group.

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the Yasawa and Mamanuca group, Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

It reported that category 5 Severe Tropical Cyclone Harold centre was located about 1060km West-northwest of Nadi at 6pm on Monday.

The weatherman says close to its centre, the cyclone is estimated to have average winds up to 220km/hr with momentary gusts to 315km/hr.

The cyclone is presently moving East at about 14km/hr and is expected to move East-southeast in the next six hours.

On this track, the cyclone centre is expected to be located about 840km West of Nadi at 6am tomorrow, and about 560km West of Nadi at 6pm later in the evening.

The weather service forecasts damaging winds are likely to begin a few or several hours before the cyclone centre passes nearby.
