A CONSTRUCTION implementation unit that is responsible for coordinating the preparation of recovery strategies in the housing and construction sector has been established by the Government.

Fiji’s Acting Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Mereseini Vuniwaqa confirmed this at the International Engineering Symposium held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva today.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said CIU was established through the Ministry of Economy and had received voluntary support from members of the Fiji Institution of Engineers.

She noted the Government had allocated funds to assist rebuilding schools that were affected by Severe Tropical cyclone Winston.

“Government has allocated F$170m to rebuild and repair schools damaged by TC Winston, the CIU in collaboration with the FIE will work to ensure that these schools are rebuilt according to the required standards,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

This partnership, according to Mrs Vuniwaqa would contribute to long-term resilience within the education sector.
