Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube says Fiji’s reputation to the rest of the world as a COVID-safe country has been shattered.

The former Reserve Bank of Fiji governor said this would delay the long-awaited recovery in tourism and would prolong Fiji’s suffering.

In a statement, Mr Narube said the favourite response from the Government, despite the mounting evidence of their inability to stop the explosion of COVID-19 cases, was that those who spoke against their decisions were “politicising” the crisis.

Mr Narube said the Government should be blamed for the disaster that Fijians were now suffering.

“The bottom line is that this Government is insensitive to the cry of the people while they cocoon themselves with six figure salaries, heavily tinted luxury cars and security guards,” he said.

“Government is clearly looking out for themselves first.

“How are we politicising the crisis when we are pointing out the reality that the cases have exceeded 100 in a single day?”

He said evidence clearly showed that the suffering had significantly increased.

“They failed to move quickly to take decisive actions that would have stopped the virus early and the distribution of food rations and money to the people by Government are grossly insufficient and unfair.”

Mr Narube claimed Government was playing politics with the lives of people by putting the economy ahead of saving lives by opening the economy, including hairdressing, when cases were rising.

He said this was obvious because they refused to seek help from abroad until now, ignored the lessons from other countries, refused to reduce wastage to free up money to help the people and dismissed the call for a united front to fight the crisis.

Questions sent to Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday remain unanswered.
