State objects to grandfather’s bail appeal

THE State on Tuesday objected to bail for a man who allegedly raped his four-year-old granddaughter.
The 47-year-old man, who is charged with one count of rape, appeared before Justice Vinsent Perera at the High Court in Suva.
The alleged offence took place in May this year in Nasinu.
State counsel Kimberly Semisi said the State objected to bail on the grounds that it was a domestic violence offence, the seriousness of the offence, it was in the public’s interest and also for the safety of the community.
She, however, said the State was also concerned of the accused person’s health.
The court heard the accused was a diabetic and needed to be injected with insulin at certain times.
Ms Semisi said if this could not be catered for at the remand centre, then it was likely to impact the accused person’s health.
She has asked for further time to file the State’s response.
The accused has been further remanded in custody.
The matter has been adjourned to October 20.
