State delegates leave for Kadavu

A GOVERNMENT delegation left Suva for Kadavu last night to support a team led by the island’s provisional administrator in conducting damage assessments after Severe Tropical Cyclone Keni.

Kadavu has a population of 8147 with a total household of 2363 in 75 villages.

The National Disaster Management Office yesterday confirmed that as of midday yesterday, there were 36 evacuation centres with 948 evacuees on Kadavu.

“Teams on the ground have been progressing well with damage assessments and the clearing of debris. They are supporting the resilient people of Kadavu to recover,” the NDMO said.

The NDMO said the team that left at midnight yesterday was to concentrate on assisting villagers in cleaning and rehabilitation works, including cleaning up of schools.

Divisional Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu earlier in the week said all 75 villages on the island were affected by the Category 3 storm.

Mr Moroivalu said the trip to Kadavu would be dependent on the progress of work being done on the Vunisea jetty after its causeway was washed out.

The Fiji Roads Authority yesterday confirmed that 80 per cent of the work on the jetty had been completed and repair works on the jetty were expected to be completed by 11pm yesterday.
