Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said if the sugarcane farmers in Fiji unite, they can force the Government to “bow down to your demands”.

He made the comments while speaking at a party meeting in Qalitu, Lautoka on Wednesday night.

“There has been only one party that has worked for you and only one union, the National Farmers Union that has fought for your rights,” he said.

“Don’t forget that.

“Whenever the farmers were faced with difficult situations and problems, these two, the Fiji Labour Party and the National Farmers Union were with you and assisted you.

“We have been fighting for you since when the Kermode Master Award was being forced on to the farmers. “That was the time the farmers came together to form this strong union and we defeated the government back then.

“The government had to give in to the farmers and the union and that was because of your solidarity and unity.

“Today the same thing can happen if the farmers can unite and rally together. This Government will also have to give in and bow down to your demands.

“All we need is to bring back that unity and that strength that we had not too long ago.”
