Standford professor gives expert evidence in rape case

STANDFORD University’s clinical professor Daryn Reicherter, M.D.was recently welcomed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde in Suva.

According to a statement by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Dr Reicherter is the Director of the  Human  Rights in Trauma Mental Health Program me and a Clinical Professor at Stanford University, School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences.

He was in the country for four days following an invitation from the DPP to give expert evidence in a rape case in the High Court (State-v-Peni Vukici).

Dr Reicherter also shared his experience and knowledge with prosecutors and invited members of the public regarding mental and psychiatric trauma and behaviours of survivors of sexual abuse during the ODPP monthly training last Friday.

He spoke about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, mental health issues and the neurological changes in the brains of traumatised people.

Members from the Fiji Police Force, the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and Empower Pacific Fiji, also attended the session.
