FORTY young men and women from the St Pius X Parish in Raiwaqa, Suva received the Sacrament of Confirmation from the head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong yesterday.
Archbishop Chong said the Sacrament of Confirmation for the parish was unique because it was inclusive.
“This makes your program very unique, it speaks a lot about what the church should do and reach out as Pope Francis said ‘we are called to reach out to those who find themselves in the peripheries of our societies’,” Archbishop Chong said.
He congratulated the youths and also commended those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the lead-up to yesterday’s important event on the church’s calendar.
Parish priest Father John McEvoy said the occasion also marked the beginning of a new chapter for the parish.
“Yesterday (Saturday) we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the church and today (yesterday) the very first day of the next 50 years you are part of it in a very big and special way,” Fr McEvoy said.
He added the confirmed candidates should continue to dream big from today onwards.
“We start dreaming, dreams right here and right now so congratulations to you and your parents,” he said.
