ST Joseph’s Secondary School is bringing in the largest contingent with a total of 29 athletes competing in 93 events at the 2019 Fiji National Schools’ Swimming Championship which begins today at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.

Team coach Esita Malani said it was the first time for the school to form a large contingent compared with previous years.

“This is actually the first time that we have this big number of girls to compete for the school and I believe this is the largest number this year. So with a big number of swimmers we have been working hard and so far everything has been going smoothly,” said Malani.

The school finished in third place last year and will reach another level this year.

“Our performance last year was good we actually finished third in the girls division but this year we expect to do way better because of our numbers and all we are targeting is the number one spot,” said Malani.

Pacific Games representatives Moana Wind and Jane Smith will also be part of the team in today’s and tomorrow’s event.

“We are lucky to have two national level swimmers and not only that, but out of 29 swimmers we have 18 club swimmers so that is a good track for us this weekend.

“We are encouraging the St Joseph’s old scholars to come out and support the girls this weekend, and bring something like fruits or help in whatever way they can,” said Malani.
