THE Women in Sports Commission was in the North last week conducting workshops on motivational sport leadership.

It was part of an outreach program to help develop leadership capacities among young leaders.

The commission with various partners, namely Labasa District Youth Council, Fiji National Sports Commission (North) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, conducted sessions on how youths could better exercise their leadership roles when serving committees, in particular sports.

“Thirteen female and seven male participants from around Labasa attended the program on Monday, March 18,” Commission chair Hamidan Bibi said.

“Outreach programs as such are key to ensuring both women and men worked towards the exercise of effective leadership and thus its development.

“Having key partners ensured that these communities are better served in their efforts to promote sports-related, as well other community-based initiatives.”

She said it was the first time for most of the participants to take part in activities that highlighted the exercise of sports leadership and other related aspects by key partners.

Among them was Lusi Ledua, a youth group leader.

“The session was very motivational and I am keen to take it back to the youth groups and communities so that we continue to improve our work with other youths in terms of leading,” said Ledua.

“It was an eye-opener for us young rural mothers because our setback is the stigma portrayed against us that once you start a family, everything is finished.

“The workshop helped bridge the gap that unemployed mothers can also be involved in sports, when compared to working mothers,” said another participant, Leti Maria.

“This is the first time for Labasa District Youth Council to partner with WISC and FNSC and this was something lacking. Many youths are encouraged and motivated by the initiatives and we hope that such programs will continue to feature in our programs in the North,” said Mohammed Shanil, a keen supporter of youth development in the North.
