Spin, pick a number

THE machine to determine the number for candidates in the National Candidates List was unveiled yesterday at the Fijian Elections Office by the Supervisor of the Elections Mohammed Saneem.
The picking of numbers will be done in a public place with candidates present and the public will be allowed to rotate the cylinder and pick numbers which will be assigned to candidates.
“The machine has been designed to create an effect inside the cylinder that the balls actually mix, there are two plates inside the cylinder which cause that rotary motion which is a tube that forms the figure eight and when you rotate the balls will stack to the middle,” said Mr Saneem.
“Any person who is going to keep picking the balls won’t have to keep moving the balls to the middle, with this design the balls actually keep coming into the middle.
“So the chance of a person’s number is not affected by a blind person lifting the ball because the cylinder determines how the ball rolls into the middle and the person has to keep picking the ball from the middle and passing it to the supervisor for announcement.”
Mr Saneem said if there were no appeals or objections to the candidates, the draw would be held on August 20.
“If there are and the Electoral Commission is able to deal with it before the 21st then we would like to do this by August 21 otherwise we will do the draw on August 24,” he said.
According to Section 36(2) of Electoral Decree, each candidate will be given a number which shall appear on the National Candidates List.
Meanwhile August 20 is the last date by which people can change their polling venues.
