The drug problem in Nausori Town was a topic of discussion among agencies in all monthly forums, says Nausori Town Council CEO Anurashika Bari.
While responding to queries from this newspaper about the drug issue in the delta town, Ms Bari said the issue was not “just for one authority to resolve”.
“Some sort of policy need to be placed on the sale of glue by businesses in order to address the glue sniffing issue in the delta town,” Ms Bari said.
“Commissioner (Commissioner for Central Division Josefa Navuku) is chairing that forum, Town Council, Nausori Chamber of Commerce and all the other agencies are part of it.
“It has to be a joint effort and we see lots of youth are involved.
“So we have to work with provincial councils, the head of the villages, and find a solution.”
Ms Bari said one way to effectively address the issue was to cut the users off from access to it.
“Where do they get the glue from? “Business people are selling it so we need some sort of policies in place on the items they’re selling, to who they’re selling, and a bit of responsibility, on age and all those.”
She said everybody had a role to play “even parents as well as they may not be aware of the type of peer pressure their children are exposed to”.
“We, as parents, need to play our own part as well in terms of looking after our children and knowing what they do also.”
