Soldier allegedly assaults police officer

“WE will not be caught up in the emotions of what has taken place.”

This is the assurance from Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho after yet another police officer became a victim of a recent attack at the Narere Police Post in Nasinu.

The officer was assisting a taxidriver who called into the Narere post after midnight yesterday because his passenger, an army officer who was allegedly heavily intoxicated, refused to pay his fare.

After settling the issue, the taxidriver left the scene while the officer proceeded back to the post when the suspect allegedly pushed him from behind and assaulted him Brig-Gen Qiliho said they would now take each day at a time and continue to serve the community in a professional manner and to the best of their ability.

“This is part and parcel of the work we have to face and it won’t be smooth sailing all the time and there will be unexpected situations that we need to learn from and improve on,” Brig-Gen Qiliho said.

Meanwhile, the police chief has directed the Police Special Response Unit training team to revisit the four policing divisions and conduct refresher trainings on the use of pepper sprays and other standard equipment.
