Facebook has refused to hear complaints from the Fiji Police Force in regard to cyber-crime cases in Fiji, Officer-in-Charge of the cybercrime unit acting ASP Abinesh Chand told the “Building Public Confidence in Elections in Fiji through Civil Society Action” workshop at the Warwick Resort in Sigatoka.

He was speaking on “Online Safety and Security For Women Candidates in Fiji”.

“We have complained to social media companies and other overseas-based agencies on the grounds of posts not meeting community standards,” he said.

“Sometimes when we report it says it does not fall in their community standards policy.

“That protects the user from continuing to bully or being unethical and continuing his or her unethical behaviour online.

“We work with Australia and New Zealand and recently we worked with the FBI. We are glad we, as a small island country, get assistance from organisations like FBI who came over to see some of the cases we were dealing with in regard to their nationals.”

He said they could only investigate, charge individuals and present people in court. He said their job was to take people to court if there was sufficient evidence and that they had no control over Fiji’s court system.
