The stage is set for another rugby season where Fiji’s top eight provinces will battle for the bragging rights to be the 2021 Skipper Provincial Cup champion.
After a trying 2020 competition, Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor said they looked forward to the 17 weeks of non-stop action ahead.
“It starts this weekend with nail-biting rugby action and the double-header in Nadi,” O’Connor said during the Skipper Cup launch in Suva yesterday.
With the hard work put in the off-season, O’Connor said this year’s ProvincialCup would not disappoint.
“It will definitely be a competitive season.”
Returning to this year’s format is theinclusion of a development grade which O’Connor is optimistic will bridge the gap between local and national teams.
“In the last few years players who exit the under-19 category had no opportunity to play in any competition and have been lost to the system.
“A development team will give these players an opportunity to participate and remain in the system.”
About $30,000 is up for grabs in this year’s Skipper Provincial Cup with the runner-up to receive $15,000.
A new Farebrother Trophy will also be challenged for this year as the former prize now rests at the Fiji Museum.
Nadi faces Rewa in the double-header at Prince Charles Park in Nadi at 3pm tomorrow.
