FIJI Sugar Corporation (FSC) has reported a 6 per cent increase in cane crushed this year compared with 2018.

The three mills are expected to crush 1.80 million tonnes of cane in 2019 and this will be 105,000 tonnes more than 2018.

Labasa mill, which closed last week, had crushed 661,000 tonnes of cane for the season with Rarawai mill expected to end the 2019 season with 486,000 tonnes of cane crushed.

The Rarawai mill in Ba ceased crushing on Sunday.

The Lautoka mill will end its 2019 crushing season on Thursday.

The Sugar Industry Tribunal had made this decision after consulting the CEOs of FSC and the Sugar Cane Growers Council.

The tribunal has urged farmers in the area to have all cane harvested and sent to the mill by Thursday.

“It is pleasing to note that all three sugar mills achieved higher crush tonnages than in 2018.

This reflects the combined efforts of canefarmers, lorry operators and mill workers to whom we are most grateful,” said FSC chief executive officer Graham Clark.
