FIJI’S golfing great Vijay Singh wants to see more locals participate at the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways tournament in a bid to create bigger interest in the sport.
The organisers of the tournament increased the field for the local golfers last year by holding a qualifying round.
This year, Amitesh Chandra, Bill Suguturaga, Roneel Prakash and Anasa Seruvatu secured their spots in the Fiji International after being placed in the top four during the qualifiers.
Sam Lee earned his spot after winning the Fiji Open Championship while Tomasi Tuivuna also got through after being the best local finisher at the event.
They will be joined by Dinesh Chand who is based in Japan.
Singh expressed his disappointment with the lack of interest from players in Europe.
“I hope they can get more locals and it will get a lot more interest to the locals here,” he said.
“I’m a little disappointed that there are not enough Europeans here. There are only eight or nine Europeans over here. I would like to see the dates changed where they can coincide with the Europeans coming closer to Fiji, so I’m going to try to work on that date.”
Singh participated at the Senior Open Championship at Saint Andrews Old Course in Scotland last week.
He finished tied 14th position with three under par 285. Singh carded rounds of 68, 69, 75, 73.
The Senior Open Championship is part of the Staysure Tour which comes under the European Tour banner.
