Former Nawaka resident Pyara Singh celebrated his 75th birthday in style by providing funds for much-needed grocery packs to the vulnerable residing in the community, who are greatly affected by COVID-19.

Mr Singh, who was the director and chief executive officer for the – then Nadi Handicraft Centre in the Jetset Town provided finance of $10,000 to the Bilal Islamic Center in Nawaka, who carried out the noble deed on his behalf.

Mufti Zainul Abideen of BIC said funding for the food ration distribution exercise came at an opportune time.

“It was specifically for the people of Nawaka since Mr Singh is originally from here,” he said.

“We carried out the third phase of food packs distribution exercise to those Fijians, who missed out in the earlier couple of assistance drives.

“Some of the areas we covered included the Nawaka Reservoir Rd, Sitai and Inia settlements respectively, including some other settlements within the vanua o Namaka.”

He said people who were rendered unemployed because of the second wave of the killer virus and resided in non-containment areas within Nawaka were ably supported with food packs.

“The targeted areas of concern were those that were not in lockdown mode, but rather areas where assistance was needed with urgency.”

Mufti Abideen confirmed 200 grocery packs, with a total value of $15,000 were distributed.

“We would like also to thank Aqua Pacific for providing $5000 worth of artesian bottled water, Signs Pacific and Punjas Group of Companies for assisting us with cartons.” Mr Singh is currently residing in Australia and turned 75 recently.
